Case study: healthcare scientist developments in Greater Manchester

This pdf format file outlines the Greater Manchester Healthcare Scientist Project.

Greater Manchester SHA’s ongoing Healthcare Scientist Project has recently initiated two more key projects which are both supported by bespoke development programmes.

Healthcare Scientist Network

Greater Manchester SHA has funded a part-time Healthcare Science Network Coordinator for a twelve months project which started in February 2004. The project will aim to develop a Greater Manchester Healthcare Science network within each organisation and across the conurbation.

To support the development needs of the network members a specifically designed development programme has been commissioned. This Network Development Programme is shared with the Allied Health Professionals giving a rich multidisciplinary learning environment and has two broad aims:

  • Help network members understand how strategic thinking, influencing and good communication contribute to effective working and enable them to take a wider view of the network’s relation to other SHA/WDCs, agencies, partners and patients.
  • Encourage network members to pursue developments, by providing guidance on linking proposals to core strategic directions of SHA/WDCs and how best to present cases for resources

The programme includes modules on:

  • Strategic Thinking
  • Influencing and Negotiating
  • Understanding The SHA/WDCs
  • Interpersonal skills
  • Making a case

Lifelong Learning Facilitators

The second project is the Lifelong Learning Facilitator project. Again this work has been shared with the Allied Health Professionals and it aims to enable HCSs and AHPs to effectively engage in Continuous Professional Development and Life-Long Learning by enhancing learning skills, identify learning needs and providing access to appropriate learning opportunities. The project will run for 2 years with seven LLL facilitators working in local ‘sector’ based teams. The teams will focus on priorities identified by HCS and AHP leads, together with identified SHA-wide initiatives. To ensure a local focus the project and action plans will be overseen by sector based steering groups made up of local AHPs and HCSs.

Academic support for this project has been arranged in the form of action learning sets for all the facilitators plus the opportunity for formal academic learning in order to meet their development needs to deliver, monitor and evaluate the project.
