| Why become
involved?
Networking and meeting with colleagues, maintaining professional
interest, developing new skills and enhancing CVs and PDPs have
all been cited as reasons why healthcare scientists become involved
in promoting the role of healthcare scientists.
How to become involved
Healthcare scientists can become involved in promoting their professions
and roles within trusts and hospitals. Create awareness of the work
of healthcare scientists to a wider audience by contributing to
hospital magazines, attending informal general staff meetings or
forums and ensuring your workplace is involved with public open
days and student placements. Healthcare scientists are also well
placed to offer advice and expertise to many hospital committees
such as health and safety, IT or clinical governance.
There is recognition in general science circles that more needs
to be done to promote the sciences to school pupils. Links between
hospitals and schools, leaflet distribution to libraries or careers
offices, work placements and lectures at local schools and colleges
are all activities that can be designed to increase interest and
awareness of healthcare science as a potential career option. Healthcare
workplaces can also join in with hospital open days to demonstrate
experiments and the work carried out in laboratories to the public
in general.
Healthcare Science Week
Healthcare Science Week, supported by the Department of Health,
is an opportunity to acknowledge the important contribution made
by all the healthcare scientists in the NHS, as well as to educate
young adults, the media and other NHS staff about the different
roles played by healthcare scientists in healthcare today.
Healthcare scientists are involved in many UK-wide activities to
raise the profile of healthcare scientists working in the NHS, and
of the vital services that they provide for patient care. The week
also showcases the range of career opportunities in healthcare science.
Activities, such as exhibitions, interactive stands, tours or on-hand
experiments have, just as crucially raised the profile of the healthcare
scientists with other healthcare colleagues, trust or hospital chairman
and executives, trust press officers reporting for newsletters,
local press and political leaders or MPs.

Local healthcare science groups
Healthcare scientists are increasingly organising local
