Healthcare Science Awareness Week pre-launch flier
The Department of Health, in partnership with the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust, will hold Healthcare Science Awareness Week on 6-15th March 2009, with the theme to be launched at the CSO Conference in November 2008.
CSO Healthcare Scientists Research Fellowship Competition launched
Under an initiative led by the Chief Scientific Officer, Professor Sue Hill, a new research fellowship scheme will provide £4 million in funding over the next three years for healthcare scientists to undertake research to improve patient services and treatment.

3rd annual UK awards for allied health professionals and healthcare scientists
Chamberlain Dunn, publishers of Health Workforce Bulletin and Employing Allied Health Professionals and Health Scientists, have launched the 3rd annual UK awards for allied health professionals and healthcare scientists. Now in its third year the AHP and HS UK Awards have recognised and rewarded numerous projects and professionals that lead innovative healthcare practice and make a real difference to patient lives. The awards promote shared learning and partnership working across the many AHP and HS disciplines and are supported by all four UK health departments, Unite the Union, NHS Employers, GateHouse Training, and the Allied Health Professions Federation. Darzi sets out case for NHS development
Changes to the NHS will be locally led, clinically driven and evidence-based, according to Lord Darzi’s report, Leading Local Change, issued ahead of his final report on the Next Stage Review. He outlines five pledges to the public and staff on how the NHS will handle changes to services including a commitment to maintaining existing services until new and better services are available to patients. A best practice guide, ‘Changing for the Better: Guidance when undertaking major changes to NHS services’, is available to all local health services.

NHS IT skills training available
The European Computer Driving Licence© (ECDL) Service offered by NHS Connecting for Health closed on 21 March 2008, this has now been replaced by the Essential IT Skills (EITS) Programme. This new service will focus on the delivery of two new qualifications, NHS ELITE and NHS Health, both fully accredited by the British Computer Society.

Workers in England will be able to use a legal right to request time off for training under new measures unveiled by the government today.
NHS Next Stage Review
Challenges for Darzi, an NHS Confederation report published on 14 May, warns that Lord Ara Darzi must learn the lessons of previous poor policy making to ensure NHS reform delivers real and sustainable benefits for patients and NHS staff. The report sets out tests for assessing and developing health policy against which Lord Darzi's NHS Next Stage Review proposals should be judged.
